The existence of this institution, organized in 1857, and which has already "become one of the brightest jewels in the coronet of the Republic," is due to the liberality of Mr. Kendall. With a heart full of sympathy for the unfortunate, he always carried a hand ready to relieve their wants and improve their condition, as far as his means would permit. The gift of a house and two acres of ground adjoining the city, in October, 1856, valued at that time at about ten thousand dollars, was the nucleus of the hundred acres of ground and the noble group of buildings which Congress, in its appreciation of this great charity, has provided for the education of the deaf and dumb of our country. The origin and progress of the institution may be seen from the following address of Mr. Kendall at the first commencement of the National Deaf-Mute College, held in Washington, June 23, 1869: --Mr. President, Ladies, And Gentlemen, --This occasion brings to me a train of interesting memories. About fifteen years ago an adventurer brought to this city five partially educated deaf-mute children, whom he had picked up in the State of New York, and commenced exhibiting them to our citizens in their houses and places of business. He professed a desire to get up an institution for the education of unfortunates of that class in the District of Columbia, raised considerable sums of money, and gathered a school of about sixteen pupils. Apparently to give respectability and permanency to his school, he sought and obtained the consent of some of our leading citizens to become its trustees. It soon appeared, however, that he had no idea of accountability to them, and only wanted their names to aid him...
