Very good in good dw. World War I-Western Front Pozieres was considered to be key to the battle of the Somme. The tiny village and nearby windmill were objectives for the British Army on the opening day of the battle on 1st July, 1916. Twenty three days and three major attacks later the 'key' was turned by the Australian troops of the 1st Division. When the Australians withdrew five weeks later they have moved the front line forward by 1500 metres. In doing so they had suffered more than 23000 casualties. UL-XXXXXX. xiv + 318pp, photos, maps.
