Blue boards, white titles on the front board and on the spine, in dust-wrapper. The author uses the motif of the horse to tell the wider Australian story of settlement, exploration, dispossession and warfare. The First Fleet carried seven horses as breeding stock. From then on, as horse stocks built up and improved, they carried explorers, who opened up the country to settlement; Aboriginal mounted police; bushrangers; and they carried men to war. Some 120, 000 horses were sent to World War I battlefields: only one was brought home.
