Excerpt from Auf Der Sonnenseite: Erz???hlungen Und Skizzen Hermann sudermann, beyond doubt the greatest artist among Germany's dramatic poets of today, was born in Matziken, province of East Prussia, on September 30, 1857. He entered the real-gymnasium of Elbing, but without finishing the course left school to become a drug gist. In 1870, however, he again took up his academic studies at the Real Gymnasium of Tilsit, and after grad nation attended, from 1875 to 1879, the historical and modern language courses at the universities of konigs berg and Berlin. For several years he was connected with the editorial staffs of various Berlin magazines. As a writer of poetry, Sudermann became first known in 1889 by his drama Ehre, which enjoyed a phenomenal suc cess and was followed by other masterly productions, viz. Sodom' s Ende Heimat Die Schmetterlingsschlacht of which Heimat was acted even in the theatres of Paris and London. Not less artistic than his dramatic writings are Sudermann's novels, the titles of which are Im Zwielicht, from which the second story of this volume is taken, Zwanglose Geschichten Geschwister Iolanthe's Hochzeit Frau Sorge Der Katzensteg Es war. The author's skill in portraying psychologically interesting characters is not less admirable than his vivid realism in picturing the landscape of East Prussia, his native district.
