A fine collection of lesser-known female soul artists on Atlantic, including artists that aren't normally associated with the label, like Mary Wells and the Pointer Sisters. All of the songs were recorded in the late '60s and early '70s, and only three of the disc's 23 tracks scratched the R&B Top 20, although most of the tracks were good enough to be hits. While the songs may not be familiar, their sweet sound is, making the disc a worthwhile purchase for fans of early-'70s soul. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
