In ââ?¬Å"Athens Shrugged,ââ?¬Â? author Craig Shaneck weaves together crime, adventure, mystery, and elements of science fiction in a fast-paced novel set in Greece, first on a picturesque island and then in modern Athens.
Ezekiel Tanner, a former U.S. Marine and espionage specialist, has moved on to a lucrative solo career in international crime, using his background and training for high-level ââ?¬Å"jobs.ââ?¬Â? Heââ?¬â?¢s been hired to retrieve a significant package for the head of a Greek crime syndicate and anticipates a payday in the hundreds of thousands of euros. While he completes the job, heââ?¬â?¢s appropriated the Reel Estate, an empty yacht in the local marina, as his temporary quarters.
Wallace Constantine is an American making a nostalgic visit to his familys former Greek island home. When Ezekiel arrives at the jobs appointed location, he finds Wallace, rather than his anticipated contact, on the scene. After immobilizing the mysterious Wallace, Ezekiel pockets his drivers license, and package in hand, returns to the yacht. When the vessel suddenly explodes, Ezekiel is badly injured. Wallaces stolen license turns up in an official search of the boats wreckage.
The Greek authorities, including Detective Lieutenant Diesi, a no-nonsense policewoman, and Lia, her high-tech specialist assistant, arrest Wallace for the explosion, and later, Ezekiel. When the men join forces and break out of the police stations holding pen, a cat-and-mouse game ensues. But who really blew up the Reel Estate, and what was the significance of that package?
The science fiction elements show their significance late in the action. The hints author Shaneck dropped earlier are finally explained, though they unfold in a rush, and coalesce in the novels ambiguous conclusion.
Fans of fast-paced crime and espionage writing in an unusual setting, along with science fiction readers, will be intrigued by ââ?¬Å"Athens Shrugged.ââ?¬Â? The stage is set for a potential sequel featuring Ezekiel, Wallace, Diesi, and Lia, but meanwhile the title ââ?¬Å"Athens Shruggedââ?¬Â? will be a lingering mystery. Is the author a fan of the Ayn Rand philosophical novel that refers to the Greek myth of Atlas the Titan, is it a comment on modern Greek society, or is it simply intended as a play on words? Readers will want to know more, as well as the story behind the epigraph. Is it a comic or ironic dedication? He writes, ââ?¬Å"I canââ?¬â?¢t wait until the courts allow us to see each other again. (For legal purposes, this is a joke.)ââ?¬Â? Readers will be on the lookout for the answers to these questions!
