Excerpt from Athalie: Trag???die French, and especially the cultivated Frenchmen for whom tragedies were written, are the natural heirs of the classical love of symmetry and finish, of perfection within a limited range. The aspirations of the Teutonic races are vaguer and less regulated; they would fain see everything at once, even at the risk of imperfection of form. All sorts and conditions of men flocked to the theatre, and their likes and dislikes reacted on the dramatist. In France the theatre followed a different line of development.
