We live in a difficult time. The world is changing in ways that are often complex, confusing, and disruptive to our lives and that can't easily be anticipated. Within such a world, there is a renewed hunger for more direct access to personal gnosis, not dependent on external authorities. Each of us craves a reliable internal compass with which to navigate a world that, in the throes of very large, seemingly insolvable environmental, political, economic, social, racial and cultural problems, is increasingly uncertain. While astrology may not be able to directly address these global issues, it can help us to cope in meaningful ways by reminding us, through an ongoing, ever-evolving conversation between psyche and cosmos, that we have a place and a purpose in the larger scheme of things. Out of this conversation can come not just a clearer sense of identity and purpose, and a greater capacity to effectively navigate one's life, but also a communion with numinous, sacred mysteries. This book narrates the history of astrology's co-evolution with science, religion and culture over thousands of years, and shows how in the postmodern era of increasing uncertainty, it can provide a more direct pathway to deep self-knowledge. The author shows how it is possible to go beyond interpretation into a more intimate exploratory relationship to a living cosmos. 472 pages with bibliography and a useful navigational index.

Books on astrology tend to come in two flavorsââ?¬"those intended for the general public like the perennial Linda Goodmanââ?¬â?¢s ââ?¬Å"Sun Signs,ââ?¬Â? and those like ââ?¬Å"Astrology in the Era of Uncertaintyââ?¬Â? by Joe Landwehr. While by no means an esoteric instruction manual, one needs more than a knowledge of what a sun sign is to appreciate the depth of research and soul-search that runs through the book.
Is astrology a science? Probably not, although the mechanistically inclined seem to wish it were. At least, suggests Mr. Landwehr, its not empirical science. Its applications are far too subjective and personal to fit comfortably into the narrow confines that define empirical science. So, rather than waste time and energy debating, he chooses to move on to the more important question of how it can best be used to help the astrologer help those seeking its insights best utilize it.
[T]he true practice of astrology goes beyond logic, back to a time and a way of relating to the cosmos, where the rational mind was only one tool, and not necessarily the best, for entering into a deeper conversation with the reality behind the birthchart. (p. 189)
To be clear, the general idea of this book isnââ?¬â?¢t new. The application of astrology to whatââ?¬â?¢s usually called ââ?¬Å"mindfulness,ââ?¬Â? among other labels, has likely been around since the first thinking human looked up and saw the stars. The first part of the book traces that history from the beginning through to the present, which Mr. Landwehr calls ââ?¬Å"the Era of Uncertainty,ââ?¬Â? a designation itââ?¬â?¢s hard to argue with. As a non-astrologer, slightly better educated on the subject than some, whoââ?¬â?¢s a history addict, I found this part especially interesting.
Having laid the foundation, the next step is analyzing the place modern astrology has in that train of history, with the goal of considering how much, if any, of what it used to be is applicable, possibly even essential, to keeping it relevant. Mr. Landwehr suggests we let it be ââ?¬Å"ââ?¬Â¦something I have a relationship with,ââ?¬Â? as astrologer Adam Elenbaas commented recently.
The rest of the book explains how we can best achieve that goal, using the authorââ?¬â?¢s own life experiences and the symbolism he calls ââ?¬Å"astropoeticsââ?¬Â? to guide us along the way. This is why one needs more than a passing grasp of the more complex aspects of astrology.
That caveat notwithstanding, I thoroughly enjoyed the book, both for the aforementioned history and because these days when it seems the world is dissolving into chaos the idea that thereââ?¬â?¢s another tool to help us find our way through, and find ourselves, is reassuring. If youââ?¬â?¢re a student of astrology still trying to figure out how to best apply what youââ?¬â?¢re learning, or just someone like me who knows enough to be dangerous, ââ?¬Å"Astrology in the Era of Uncertaintyââ?¬Â? by Joe Landwehr really needs to be added to your reference shelf.
