This sweet-natured British situation comedy proved beyond doubt that there is no statute of limitations on romance. Army officer Lionel Hardcastle (Geoffrey Palmer) and nurse Jean Parteger (Judi Dench) lost touch with one another after their brief affair in 1953. Flash-forward to 1991. Now an author of musty geographical books, Lionel was unexpectedly reunited with Jean, who had gone into business for herself as the owner of a secretarial service. It took some doing, but the caustic, imperious Lionel and the rigid, immutable Jean finally realized that they'd known one another (in the Biblical sense) way back when. It also took some doing for these two diametrical opposites to admit that they were still passionately in love, In the course of As Time Goes By's nine seasons, two other romances transpired: One involved Jean's daughter Judith (Moira Brooker) and Lionel's publisher Alistair (Philip Bretherton); the other, which didn't really take off until the series had practically run its course, involved Jean's employee Sandy (Jenny Funnell) and a police officer named Harry (David Michaels). Also in the cast were Frank Middlemass as Lionel's boisterous father Rocky and Joan Sims as Rocky's new bride Madge. Weighing in at 65 episodes, As Time Goes By originally aired on the BBC from 1992 to 2002 and has since been seen in the United States courtesy of PBS. Rovi

As Time Goes By is a wonderfully entertaining 1990s romantic comedy series starring Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer. Dench is Dench, masterful in almost any role, and Palmer is the king of droll, deadpan humor. The supporting cast is superb, the scripts are clever, what's not to love? The DVD set I got from Alibris was like new and played flawlessly. One of the best gifts I have ever found for my wife, not least because I got equal benefit from it.
