Seller's Description:
Near Fine in Very Good (Minus) jacket. 8vo-over 7¾"-9¾" tall. Gogarty was the model for Buck Mulligan in Joyce's "Ulysses." This is Gogarty's most famous book, essential for learning about the remarkable Irish Literary Renaissance of the early Twentieth Century. Despite its fame, oddly enough, it is not a common title. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Edition. Brick red cloth binding; titled and decorated on the spine in black and gilt. The front cover has two figures contemplating a statue on Sackville (now O'Connor) Street in Dublin. Clean text; x, 342 pages. Introduction by Francis Hackett. Slightly faded around the margins, else Fine. The dustjacket is worn at the edges but remains bright; it suffers from several large chips to the tops of the covers and middle of the spine. In an archival plastic protector.

Seller's Description:
Very Good (Plus) in Very Good Plus jacket. 8vo-over 7¾"-9¾" tall. Signed by Author "An extraordinary book by a distinguished Irish doctor, senator, wit and man of letters"-from the Introduction by Francis Hackett. Gogarty (1878-1957) was a physician, poet, and a senator of the Irish Free State, but will probably be most remembered as the prototype for "Buck Mulligan" in the masterwork "Ulysses" by his friend and Martello Tower roommate James Joyce. This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of his first prose work, an early nonfiction novel of a chatty sort similar to George Moore's "Hail and Farewell" (Moore, like much of Dublin, was also his friend; the exceptions might have been Samuel Beckett and Paddy Kavanagh, who were participants in litigations against him). Large octavo format; brick-red cloth binding, with a blindstamped design of two characters strolling down what is now O'Connell Street in Dublin. There are two spots of sunfade on the spine and there is fading at the margins. Clean text; x, 342 pages. Illustrated. Small bookseller's label on the rear paste-down. Tipped onto the front free endpaper is an AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by Gogarty, a thank-you with mention of papers. The note is undated, but was written in New Jersey, and Gogarty had arrived in America in 1939, so Quercus feels that might be the timing. The dustjacket is Very Good (Plus). Complete, but shows some wear at the margins. In an archival plastic protector. Gogarty's most famous, and most uncommon book, particularly with such close association with the author.
