Rossetti has called attention to this in a very excellent and able review of the Bothie which appeared in the first number of that most interesting, though short-lived, periodical, the Germ, published in the year 1850. In the second canto (like Goethe's Hermann and Dorothea, the Bothie is composed of nine cantos), the night, we find, and the dancing are over, but 'Morn, in yellow and white, came broadening out from the mountains' long ere Hope, Lindsay, and Airlie, had returned: --Hewson and Arthur, with Adam, had on the other hand got home by eleven, and had been bathing as usual before breakfast. After the breakfast is over the dialogue follows (which is the most witty portion of the poem), --the famous conversation on 'Woman, ' clearly the proper subject for discussion on the morning after a 'dance.' The dialogue begins by Philip Hewson, the poet, the eloquent speaker, attacking' fine-ladies, ' and declaring that did they know the grace, the attraction, that labour adds to the beauty of woman, much waste and loss would be saved us;--and as he warms to his subject, and grows fervent, impassioned, and eloquent, --' Take off your coat to it, Philip, ' cried Lindsay, outside in the garden, 'Take off your coat to it, Philip.' But Philip was not to be silenced by persiflage of this description, and nowise abashed proceeded to extol the beauty of labour and real earnest toil for the necessities of life, as compared with the dreary inane existence of 'riding about in a carriage, ' and the 'utter removal from work, mother earth, and the objects of living.'
