(Austin, Texas), 8 7/8 x 11 3/8 inches tall glossy pictorial hardcover, no dust jacket (as issued), copiously illustrated with black-and-white photographs and drawings, [14], 502 pp. Very slight soiling and rubbing to covers. On the top margin of the title page, nicely signed by the author, with a personal inscription to a colleague. Otherwise, a near fine copy-clean, bright and unmarked-of the uncommon work. Note that this is a heavy and oversized book, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. ~HH~ [5.5P] The author, a UCLA professor of vascular surgery, introduces of each publication that he believes added to development of ideas in vascular surgery, with translations into English of texts in Spanish, French and German. The volume includes selections from Paré, Astley Cooper, and Trendelenburg and Leo Berguer's explanation of thromboangiitis obliterans. Some are arcane, such as Powers' description of wiring of aneurysms and Schafer and Hardin's article on use of temporary polyethylene shunts to permit homologous graft replacement of vital vessel segments. Most, however, are familiar milestones, such as the late Arthur Vorhees' article on use of Vinyon-N for arterial reconstruction. This, as with other papers, is present in its entirety. This volume is enhanced by many photographs of the giants of vascular surgery.
