A charming tale of rural romance on Dartmoor, England during the end of the nineteenth century, complete with local atmosphere, comic personalities, and various conflicts between social classes, religious perspectives and morality. Brian Challacombe of Northbeer, a 21-year-old gentleman, is torn between two women: Nona Wistman, the sheltered and naive daughter of the parish rector, and Maria Zaple (Arminel), a poor girl of beauty and education. In working through this love triangle, Trevena grapples with the theme of suppressing human nature. The seriousness of this conflict is off-set by a comical episode of courting: Sal Lampey, an old widow who owns the village pub, is pursued by a foolish and opportunistic young man, William Coneybear, who is more interested in Sal's establishment than her person. Other local men have similar amorous leanings towards Sal, which lead to an unforgettable riot in the village. "Arminel of the West" is the novel, originally published in 1907, that precedes and foreshadows the famous Dartmoor Trilogy by the same author. This edition includes detailed annotations of the many Biblical, Classical, Shakespearean, historical and geographical references in the book.
