St. Augustine, Bunyan, and Merton represent different phases in the history of Christianity, and illustrate the diversity of the Christian experience as it is reflected in autobiography. Yet the spiritual autobiographies of these men are remarkably similar in regard to certain themes and patterns which the author identifies as archetypes. The author concludes that in the autobiographical process of ordering the world within, one is led to discover, or create, an orderly world without.
