If "Apathy and Other Small Victories" isn't consistently clever and hysterical, it's certainly both of those things on an inconsistent basis. Think of it as a watered-down version of "Office Space" meets "Fight Club." There are moments in 'Apathy' that literally made me laugh out loud, which alone makes it worth recommending to others. The story itself doesn't quite pay off, and Shane (the main character, who indeed appears to be a man without a country or at least a hometown) is overall too unlikeable to genuinely root for. Still, it's a funny debut novel and well worth the quick read.
skiceless

it has it's moments...
It is a genuinely funny book. Mr. Neilan makes colorful metaphors that really had me thinking "I wish I'd thought of it!". And the cast of characters are hilarious. The animal "loving" neighbor above him is quite fun, as is his dentist who very frequently gets his head shut in between bus doors. My only problem, besides it being too short, is that he reuses some of the funny lines and at other times drags the joke out. With a little better editing, this would have been a 5-star book. Still highly recommend reading it though, especially for all you apathetic people like me.
