"Looking at real estate isn't usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can't fix their own marriage. There's a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can't seem to agree on anything, from where they want to live to how they met in the first place. Add to the mix an eighty-seven-year-old woman who has lived long enough not to be afraid of someone waving a gun in her face, a flustered but still-ready-to-make-a-deal real estate agent, and a mystery man who has locked himself in the apartment's only bathroom, and you've got the worst group of hostages in the world. Each of them carries a lifetime of grievances, hurts, secrets, and passions that are ready to boil over. None of them is entirely who they appear to be. And all of them--the bank robber included--desperately crave some sort of rescue. As the authorities and the media surround the premises these reluctant allies will reveal surprising truths about themselves and set in motion a chain of events so unexpected that even they can hardly explain what happens next"--

ââ?¬Ë?This is a story about a bridge, and idiots, and a hostage drama and an apartment viewing. But itââ?¬â?¢s also a love story. Several, in fact.ââ?¬â?¢
Where to start with Anxious People? Itâs one of those books that really sneaks up on you and tugs at your heart strings in a way I was not expecting. I was fully ugly-crying in the middle of the day by the end â" thank goodness there is a pandemic or I likely would have been crying on a train instead of in my living room!
Whenever I see that a book is labelled as ââ?¬Ë?funnyââ?¬â?¢ my guard goes up. This book is not laugh out-loud funny but it is humorous in itââ?¬â?¢s writing and that makes it a genuine pleasure to read. I must give full kudos to the translators who have kept the charm of the author without sacrificing anything. This book is also very quotable with some great phrases about modern life.
At first I thought the book was a little farcical (the exchange with the estate agent in particular) but then as we learn about each character and how they came to be where they are it just became poignant instead. Each character has a hidden facet that we slowly learn about as the book progresses and I enjoyed how well-rounded and interesting they were as a result. I also enjoyed how the author turned some exchanges on their head or introduced small cliff-hangers or reveals at the end of chapters to keep tension high and made it hard to put the book down!
Overall, Anxious People is a poignant and touching story about anxiety and how our life impacts those around us - itâs a pleasure to read and I highly recommend it. Thank you to NetGalley & Penguin â" Michael Joseph UK for the chance to read the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Best book to start 2021 with!
First official 2021 book rec: Anxious People by Frederick Bachman
Seriously. This. Was. So. Good.
It was the perfect 2021 read! Not to mention the plot centers between December 30th (the day I started it) and January 1st (the day I finished it). It's a love story (not a Romance, that's different!) and a story about second chances and compassion and idiots. All of this is told through the lens of a hostage situation. It's not a crime story, it's a people story. It is dark but hopeful, harsh but compassionate, it's literally about the second chance that we all get with this new year! If House in the Cerulean Sea was the perfect sweet 2020 read to bring you comfort and togetherness, Anxious People is the 2021 book that tells us to keep moving and show compassion. You. All. Need. To. Read. It.
