Being honest, I read the first couple of chapters and it wasn't my cup of tea, being a young adult kind of story. I liked the format where the story was told via a podcast, and the presentation of ants and other insect species as a humanity parallel was rather unique.
But then, something happened. All hell broke loose, and the book went extremely dark. Writing this review, a day later, after reading the book twice, I still cannot stop thinking about it and in my book, this is the mark of a fantastic novel. YA books are usually so bland on the outside and suffer from what I like to call lite - eg the dystopia lite of the Hunger Games. However, this book doesn't suffer from this as when you delve deeper, you can reach the complex questions it poses.
Is Antuna's Story perfect? No. It doesn't seem to know it's audience, YA or adult, and some of the themes and allegory are on the nose or too advanced for younger readers, especially the very young YA audience. I think its message would be best served as an adult book. However, I urge you to persist with Antuna's Story, it's a unique piece of work and the fact that it's still running through my head makes it worthy of five stars.
