In fact, this mass hearkens back to earlier models, such as the Classical masses of Haydn and Mozart, and is accordingly compact and economical, in contrast with the monumental Missa Solemnis in D major of Beethoven. For this performance by Lukasz Borowicz with the RIAS Kammerchor and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Bruckner's mass is interspersed with a Graduale by Robert Führer, an Offertorium by Joseph Eybler, and a Te Deum by Johann Baptist Gänsbacher, and supplemented with Bruckner's own Magnificat in B flat major and his Tantum ergo in B flat major. This programming choice makes the album fuller and gives the listener better value, but shows the mass to be a minor work that is best appreciated by specialists.
