Victoria Glendinning is a well-known biographer, her Trollope biography following acclaimed books on Edith Sitwell, Vita Sackville-West, and Rebecca West. This study of Victorian writer Anthony Trollope examines his life as a novelist, and also pays close attention to his career as a civil servant in the British Post Office until he was fifty-two years old. Trollope's energy was truly remarkable; he travelled nearly non-stop for the Post Office, yet wrote nearly thirty novels (many of them three volumes) and travel books prior to his retirement. Glendinning's scholarship is also remarkable. She engagingly weaves his novels into his home and social life to assist the reader to understand this complex and troubled man. Trollope overcame his wretched childhood and life-long depression to write novels that enlight and entertain today. Glendinning's biography is a good as the genre gets.
