Mirjam tatters the image of Anne with unnecessary, disgusting comments and assumptions. I was sickened and astounded that anyone would write such derogatory remarks about Anne. She uses quotes from the Anne's diary and other Anne Frank books and literally twists them around to mean things that were never intended. The author didn't even consider interviewing Miep or any of Anne's friends, stating their memories "aren't reliable." "A Hidden Life" is mostly made up of the authors opinion and what she believes Anne (and everyone else in the annex) was thinking. What's worse is: she mixes fact with fiction and does not draw a line between the two. There are a few little known facts about the van Pels family and Fritz Pfeffer - but little else. Mirjam was the translator for Anne's diary, but what gave her the right to pen this book? In the author's mind, it seems she knows Anne better than the young diarist knew herself.
