The photographs consist of a series of movements shown in stop-motion sequence: Each plate is a two-page spread, and helps to document nearly 300 separate actions split into as many as 50 individual shots per action. Most of the plates show three different simultaneous perspectives on a single action, which Muybridge achieved with 12 to 36 cameras and his own tripping device.
