We unscrew the bulb, drop it in the wastebasket, and screw in a fresh one. But the light still does not work, despite our thumpings and mutterings. We try the new bulb in a second flashlight, and it works. Digging the original bulb out of the wastebasket, we find that it, too, works in the second flashlight. We reject our first hypothesis and form a new one: the batteries are worn out. After inserting fresh batteries into the first flashlight, we flick the switch and it works.
