Anne is not the same author she was when writing the vampire chronicles and writing about the Mayfair witches. However, she has not lost her touch in story-telling. She is still able to ensnare the reader into the gothic Middle Ages, and make you feel like you are really there! Toby O?Dare is a far more interesting character than the angel Malchiah. (Odd, I think.) For me, the best parts of the novel are those when the reader learns of Toby growing up in New Orleans, the tragedy that scars him, and how he came to be an assassin. There is another story of Fluria and Godwin, involving Lea and Rosa, that had me intrigued. The remainder left me asking, ?Where is Anne going with this?? Peaking my curiosity, the last page has me eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.
