What they find instead is a nightmare in a migrant labor camp, where they become the indentured servants of a soulless crew chief and his mindless henchmen. Vacillating between hope and despair, Jared must stay alert-and alive-to rescue his own family and the prisoners around him from a life of continued degradation. In the year before he wrote Angel City, Patrick Smith did what he called "physical research," disguising himself and joining migrant crews as they picked whatever vegetable was in season. He mentally recorded the events he encountered and wrote the novel is just a few weeks. His reason for writing Angel City? "The first step toward eliminating injustice is to expose it," he said. Angel City was made into a TV movie in 1980"--

I am originally from Mendenhall, Mississippi, hometown of Patrick D. Smith, author of Angel City. Pat wrote this book after moving to Florida. The book was very good, and the movie portrayed what was written in the book. I believe the movie, made for television, aired in 1991. He went "under cover" to gain first-hand knowledge in the writing of this book. I had a copy of this book, with an inscription from Pat, and cherished it very much. However, out of the goodness of my heart, I loaned the book to an individual who has not had the decency or courtesy to return to me in all these years. This is why I am searching for another copy. Mendenhall is a fairly small town in Mississippi, with an approximate population of 2,500-3,000, and I deemed it an exceptional honor to have a noted author from there autograph my book. I'm just very sorry that I chose to lend my copy to someone who obviously doesn't share the same integrity. My advice here is to be very careful and selectful to whom you lend any of your prized possessions. I believe I can say that I learned a valuable lesson. The sentiment means more to me than the cost of the book. If you have never read this book or watched the movie, you should. It is a very compelling book, based on a true story. I think that Pat Smith is a superb writer, and I feel blessed to have known him.
