I want to live in Andrew Henry's meadow - the epitome of a young man's desire for a kind of autonomy - a sweet life - that just may be possible...
Of course, reality supersedes - parents desires trump kid's fantasies of freedom - they know that it is obtainable though, having experienced it in that summer as children. And I wish Doris Burn had written "A Return to Henry's Meadow".
This would be a very cool black and white - pen and ink animated short film

A wonderful tale of creativity and individuality
Along with Virginia Lee Burton's "The Little House", "Andrew Henry's Meadow" was one of three books my father used to read to me all the time as a child. I am now enjoying reading these same stories to my own son, and have shared both of these during "Parent Share" day at his elementary school. The copy I bought on Alibris.com was donated to the school library so hopefully more kids will get to read it.
Andrew Henry's Meadow is wonderfully written and the hand-drawn illustrations are extremely detailed, and as a child I used to study them for hours, looking at all the little items I may have missed before.
Andrew Henry loves to build things. A helicopter in the kitchen, and eagle's cage in the living room, a merry-go-round in his older sisters' room, and a series of ropes and pulleys in his two brothers' room. Problem is, Andrew Henry's family doesn't like all the inconveniences of his projects in their way.
So, Andrew Henry leaves home to find his own place. Loaded with building supplies, he soon finds the perfect, open meadow where he builds his own house. (See picture on the book cover.) Soon after, another "misunderstood" child arrives with the items pertaining to her hobby. Andrew Henry builds her a custom house that fits her interests. Then another boy arrives, and so on until most of the neighborhood kids have houses built in Andrew Henry's meadow.
Of course, the parents start wondering where all the children have disappeared to. To find out what happens......buy this wonderful book. :-)

Encourage imagination
This book is a delightful story of a very active boy. In a time when it is difficult for boys to spend there energies in a positive way, this story leads the way. Andrew had a wonderful imagination and natural talent for inventing and building. Not only did he make things for fun, but used his abilities to serve others. Great morals for today. It will build strong character and inspire those who read it.

Still Love this book!!!
I know I'll probably write this review like a child, because that is how I remember the story, and how the story makes me feel now. I hadn't seen this book for about 25 years, but I still thought about this book. It's one of the few that I remember from many years ago. The way Doris Burn writes and the very memorable drawings are just amazing. I can remember reading this book over and over again while staying at my grandparents house for vacation. This book even got me imagining, drawing, and trying to build my own personal "houses" out of anything I could find. Even 30 years later, I still love this book. And now so do my kids.
