The book falls into three broad sections, the first of which analyses data on crime and known offenders in England and Wales and reviews the research literature on the factors found to be associated with offending. The second section reviews and extends the application of statistical techniques to analyse criminal behaviour and the third considers criminal justice policy, in particular, the extent to which custodial sentences prevent offenders from committing crime.
