I picked up chess about 6 months ago, and this book is what helped me to understand what the game is actually about and how it is played. The book is completely user friendly and yes, it drastically improves your game, but it helps you enjoy the game more too! (On one online sight, with inaccurate chess ratings, I have jumped about 250 points - but rating is definitely not everything!) I've gone through one other book on chess for the beginner (Basic Chess, Hamlyn) and found this one to be far superior, even if older. I think its a classic, and am continuing to hunt down other books by the same author!
