It's Christmas, and Marine Lieutenant Oliver Wright wants two things--to duck a medical discharge and to be a homicide detective again if World War II ever ends. Neither will happen if he can't evade the Navy surgeon who wants to cut off his leg. He's given a taste of his old life when a soldier is murdered, and Oliver is called in to investigate. He struggles to solve the crime while protecting the secrets of a grieving mother; riding herd on a twelve-year-old girl and her rambunctious dog; and deciding whether he can trust a woman who once broke his heart. Then a priest is murdered, and an innocent man confesses. Oliver believes the murders of the priest and the soldier are connected, and he and his German shepherd, Harley, follow a trail of clues from jazz clubs to the San Francisco Opera House. When he solves the murders, he receives an unexpected Christmas present--the possibility of being a homicide detective again. But now that the job is within his grasp, what is he willing to sacrifice to claim it? Set in northern California, An Unlamented Death is the third stand-alone book in the Oliver Wright WWII Mysteries.

Its Christmas, 1944. Nothing is right with the world. Just ask former homicide detective and current Marine Lieutenant Oliver Wright. Hes facing a probable medical discharge and loss of his leg from a devastating wound. He doesnt want either one as if that matters. Life has been difficult for everyone since WWII set the world on edge. Northern California, where Lt. Wright lives, is now home to prisoner of war camps, refugees, immigrants, and a host of military personnel staging for the Pacific Theater. Its in this melting pot of displaced people that a young Marine is found murdered, and Oliver Wright sets out to find his killer.
Lt. Oliver Wright is a man of great depth, strong moral fiber, intelligence, and pain. While he is at his core a man of the law, he has a great heart for people- especially those he considers friends. Hes an interesting contrast in strength and weakness, and this duality makes him a remarkable protagonist. Readers cant help but feel for this man and what hes been through.
ââ?¬Å"An Unlamented Deathââ?¬Â? is the third stand-alone book Mary Adler has written in the Oliver Wright WWII Mystery series, and itââ?¬â?¢s top-notch. Itââ?¬â?¢s full of intrigue, suspense, action, tragedy, angst, family drama, and wit. The mystery involves the death of a young Marine and then the death of the local priest, who had made many people in the community furious with his sermons about forgiving the Germans. Oliver wrestles with possible witnesses of these two deaths, determining if there is any connection and if the priestââ?¬â?¢s death is accidental. That would be enough to fill any manââ?¬â?¢s day. But he does this while wrangling the ever-curious, constantly busy 12-year-old Rosie and her boisterous pup, an anxious friend with a secret only Oliver knows, and a military surgeon determined to amputate his leg.
This novel is rich not only in its characters, but with its well-written storyline, and especially the setting that comes brilliantly alive in the readers mind thanks to the authors talent. While I wasnt alive in WWII, as a Boomer Im only one generation removed and remember hearing the stories told by everyone in my family. I was taken back to my childhood with such simple things as the way laundry for ironing was sprinkled with water from a glass Coke bottle with a removable sprinkle head (we still had ours when I was a child), as well as the way everyone in the community knew each other. So many things were at once nostalgic and heart-warming.
I havenââ?¬â?¢t had the pleasure of reading the first two books in this series. Yet. I will be resolving that issue as soon as I can. I fell in love with Oliver Wright, his dog Harley, and the people within their orbit. I fell in love with this place and this time, so rich with people of diverse backgrounds, many of them immigrants to the US before Germany, Italy, and Japan decided to take on the world. The reminder of how deeply divided many communities, friends, and even some families were during those difficult years was profoundly moving. Mary Adler has created a majestic and bittersweet masterpiece in ââ?¬Å"An Unlamented Death,ââ?¬Â? and I canââ?¬â?¢t wait for more from her. If you enjoy historical fiction, WWII-era stories, hard-boiled detective novels, or just mysteries with great characters, youââ?¬â?¢ll love this story.
