Many of the religious houses of Northumberland were defended in the manner of a castle, having their strong outer walls and fortified gate-towers; others, like Blanchland and Brinkburn, seem to have relied for safety on their seclusion in deep-wooded river-valleys, surrounded by wild and lonely moorlands. The island monastery of Lindisfarne was defended by a castle, but seems to have owed the immunity from pillage which it alone enjoyed among all the monasteries of Northumberland to the respect which even the Scots could own for Cuthbert its patron saint. The monastic remains in the county may be briefly described. The grand old Romanesque church of Lindisfarne, round which such memories crowd of Saxon bishops, wild sea-kings, and Norman monks, is the oldest monastic church in Northumberland. The episcopal dignity having been transferred to Durham before the Conquest, Lindisfarne was subsequently refounded as a priory or dependent house of the great Benedictine monastery upon the Wear. Here, on Holy Isle, no sound of strife or martial armament disturbed the recluses' prayer; from the cares of state and policy that beset the thorny splendour of Durham the monks of Lindisfarne were free; their cloister long resounded only to the cry of the water-fowl or the roar of the waves, and in the reign of Henry II. was celebrated as the " School of Saints." An interesting series of " Account Rolls" of Lindigfaroe remain at Durham, in which we may read the story of the house from year to year, and see the monks at their employments, at one time dispensing a yearly income equal to 2,000 in our money, and a...
