A I could be well fatissied if all would do it, who have the opportunity; but the mifery is, thefe dys of preparation, as vigils and eves, axe too generally abufed, and the fpirit of the church, is in this point almost furgot; for sha' they are observed with failing, yet this is done? with fo much liberty, variety and eafe, that it has now more formality in it than of a penitential work. But, as for any thing tile, who can see any distinction beiwixt thefe and any other days of the week? Ti.osc who have leifure are fi en at plays, and at their games and diver/ions; and it is well, if fomttimes they carry not on their diverfions fo long, till the holiday breaks in upon them. And for fuch whole businefs it is to wcik, labour, ferve or wait on others, they are fo much taken up on thefe days, above any others, that they are generally then in a hurry; preparing indeed, but it is, that either the houfe, or thofe that command it, may appear in their holiday vanity.
