I venture to point out also that the monograph has been written thousands of miles from the sources at a time when the lines of communication have been worse than uncertain. It has been impossible, therefore, to verify many statements, or to subject others to a new scrutiny. My thanks are due to the american-scandinavian Foundation and to the University of Chicago, whose generous support made my studies abroad possible, to the authorities of the Royal and University libraries at Copenhagen for their courtesy and helpfulness, and to my Wife, who relieved me of most of the drudgery of copying materials.
