Excerpt from An Elementary Course of Civil Engineering Charged with teaching in the Military Academy a course of civil constructions, conjointly with the one of military engineering, the author was forced to gather his means from every source within his reach, and to embody them in the most convenient manner for the benefit of his pupils. The information thus collected, assumed by degrees the form of the work now laid before the public. It is but a part of the course taught at present to the Cadets of the Military Academy; being what the author deemed would be most suited to the wants of other seminaries of learning, and to young men who are preparing themselves as civil engineers. The author claims no merit for the contents of the work; the ideas and precepts, which it embodies, are but a part of the common stock belonging to the profession in general; he has only endeavoured to exercise a discriminating judgment in selecting from the various sources of information, both written and oral, to which he had access, what seemed to him most worthy of confidence. The faults of the work, of which no one can be more sensible than the author is, are peculiarly his own; its merits must be shared among many abler authorities, both among the dead and living.
