The text of this speech given by American lawyer, politician, and philanthropist Robert C. Winthrop (1809-1894), at an event that hoped to raise money for erecting an equestrian statue of George Washington in Boston Public Garden. Winthrop covers a lot of ground here, including the topics of the American Revolution and of Washington, but much more than these, of course. The statue, designed by American sculptor Thomas Ball (1819-1911), was finished and installed in 1864.
