The next order (mestees) arise from a communication be tween a white man and quadroon woman; and the offspring of a mestee woman with a white man are a perfect white, and free by. the laws of the island.--The slaves never eat with the white people. The days are not less than twelve, nor more than fourteen hours in length: The pleasantest time for taking the air is a little before sun-rise, and half an hour after it t the evenings are very close and hot; but the clouds in general exhibit the most beautiful imagery; at the dawning of the day the majestic columns and glowing tints they display exceed all description; and after sun-set the mild lightnings are seen playing iri a variety of directions upon the tops of the lofty mountains; whilst the night-flies, grasshoppers, and crickets, make so great a buzzing, as very much to alarm a stranger, who cannot account for the unusual noise; as well as the fire-flies, which, containing a G natural natural phosphorus, appear like so many sparks wherever their luminous bodies are wandering. There is scarcely any twilight here: It is about these times the insects begin and end their depredations; particularly the musquitoes, which are very troublesome, especially to Englishmen who bring with them a roast-beef habit, and are of sanguine complexions. The town stands low, is populous, and very unwholesome: It is well supplied with water, there being many public pumps. The ships water is got at a place..
