Turgid prose
This book is not a history of California. It's a literary deconstruction. The people discussed (Mark Twain, Jack London, Leland Stanford, etc.) don't live their lives, they're all constructing mental modalities for viewing their surroundings, etc. Dull, slow going and pointless.
