The main problem that the editors have encountered in organizing the present collection is "Which Theme" should the essays address? The honorand, Marcus Faulkner Cunliffe, is noted for his extraordinarily catholic interest which span the entire specturm of the humanities. The full range of Cunliffe's interests, enthusiams and expertise will only become clear after a detailed scrutiny of the bibliography of his writings at the end of this book. Marcus Cunliffe is the author of ten books, the editor (or co-editor) of a further eight, and has also written many seminal articles and review essays. If this "Festschrift" was to have a distinct theme, we asked ourselves, did these writings have some aspect in common? As editors, we eventually agreed that they had. All of Cunliffe's work at some point touches on the "Separateness", the "Americanness" or the "Americanity" of the United States - on the evolution of American national character; how the Americans saw themselves and have been seen by others; continuity and change in American life; old and new world contrasts and similarities; "Two-way Influences": in the American-European relationship; the lineaments of American culture. Throughout its history, Americans have been concerned that the United States should have a culture respectable enough to set beside that of other nations and second, that her culture should be unmistakeably "American" - in idiom, theme, and so on. For Cunliffe, American "Nationalism" was a self-conscious creation, and George Washington was its symbol. It is, then, with the recurrent themes of American contrasts, character, culture and identity with which this volume is concerned. The essays are organized around a duality. First, how have Americans viewed themselves, either through cultural or literary perspectives, through the prism of revered heroes or institutions, aspects of the American military tradition, or through sociological and historiographical analysis? A second theme, as a counter-point, is what "Foreigners" have made of the United States - Tocqueville, clerics and letterists. Given the nationality of the honorand and of the contributors, it is altogether appropriate that some of these should be "British" reflections, whether Methodist preachers, authors, or the peppery opinions of British general officers encountering their American counterparts for the first time in the Second World War. All the contributors are British; this was not by design, it just turned out that way - the accidental does play an important part in the composition of the "Festschrift" after all. The subjects have been chosen because Marcus Cunliffe himself made some important contribution to our understanding of them.
