Illustrated throughout with color photographs and with reproductions. Lavishly illustrated story of "American Flyer" toy trains. They first appeared in the first decade of the 20th century with their first catalog appearing in 1910, when the fastest vehicle known to man was the steam locomotive. Previous to this, a small line of wind-up toy trains had been produced by a Chicago company owned by William F. Hafner. In 1906, he met W.O. Coleman, the owne rof a Chicago hardware manufacturing company and the two partnered to make Hafner's wind-up trains in Coleman's plant under the new name "American Flyer". The two parted ways in 1913. In 1918, American Flyer produced its first electric train, an "O" guage train in which an electric moter replaced the clockwork motor. In 1925, it began offering wide-guage trains to compete with Lionel. American Flyer struggled through the Great Depression but survived and in 1937 Coleman sold out to A, C. Gilbert, maker of the "Erector Set". The American Flyer was discontinued in 1966 (five years after Gilbert's death), though in 1967, Lionel announced ii had purchased the American Flyer name, which carries on to this day.
