Seller's Description:
Very good. binding good. light cover rub marks and scratches. minor edge and corner wear. no marks on text or illustrations. 147 pages, 11" x 8 3/4", Catalogue that accompanied the exhibition American Artists and the Louvre held June14-September 18, 2006, at the Musee du Louvre, Paris organized by the Terra Foundation for American Art and The Florence Gould Foundation. American Artists and the Louvre explores the origins of the artistic exchanges between France and the United States from the 18th century onward, and sheds new light on the museum s long-time role as a free academy for artists from America. As a talisman, the Musee du Louvre held a special place in the minds of these American artists and exerted a strong influence on them, especially in the perception of their role in relation to history. This influence is exemplified by the Gallery of the Louvre (1831-33), a feat of pictorial and pedagogical prowess, executed by Samuel F.B. Morse in the Salon carre, celebrating the most prestigious museum of European art and its collection of old masters. This exhibit pays tribute to the first generation of American painter, whose paintings attracted attention in Paris. Works range from the masterpieces of Benjamin West to the images of the North American Indian tribes painted by George Catlin and exhibited in the Louvre. Haven of permanence in the middle of the ferment of competing styles for more than two centuries, the Louvre was, and still is, the first stopping place in the artistic pilgrimage of Americans abroad. They come to honor heroes of art history and the legendary contributions to artistic education in general.
