And the river, deeper rending "With its strong arm wildly whirled; And the forest, robing all Like a rich imperial pall! Beech wood with the walnut crowding, Strong oak with frail myrtle tree, --Broad-branched chestnut's golden shrouding, Forest pride of Italy!' Olive, fig, and rampant vine, And on high the silver pine! Higher still, the mountain prairie, Roses and ranunculus--Rocks of eagles' territory--World all safely severed thus, Save where zephyr of the south Opens wide her balmy mouth.
