Sept ans apres l'ete de leur rencontre, alors qu'il est lyceen, Damian voit reapparaitre Alma dans sa vie: elle devient sa maitresse, dans l'autre sens de ce mot en francais. Desormais, le destin donnera a Damian, tout au long de son existence, programmee ou accompagnee par les mots du vocabulaire, des rendez-vous avec celle qui, rescapee du pire et mysterieusement fixe dans sa jeunesse, ne le retrouve que pour lui offrir le meilleur: l'eternel retour de la passion. Ce roman ne pourra etre qualifie de baroque que par l'exces de sa reponse a une forme classique: l'abecedaire. Sans doute peut-on y voir l'empreinte et l'accent de l'ancienne culture d'Europe centrale dans une oeuvre de la litterature francaise d'aujourd'hui.
