In 1992 Rebecca Coupe Franks was an up-and-coming trumpeter, one whose technique was improving year by year and showed plenty of enthusiasm in her playing. She would have a lower profile (while still being quite active) in the years after All of a Sudden. The music on her fun CD is soulful, slightly offbeat, and stretches boundaries, at times recalling Cannonball Adderley's band and early-'70s Freddie Hubbard. Among the tunes performed are the slightly demented "All of a Sudden," "Serendipity" (highlighted by a creative solo from Franks), the unpredictable "Outside Looking In," and the dramatic second version of the title cut. A few songs use background gospel singers, "Red Skin, Blue Skin" has Franks showcased as an overdubbed brass choir, tenor saxophonist Javon Jackson and pianist Kevin Hays have their share of solos, and bassist Scott Colley is featured on "All Right Baby." Franks, who at times shows the influences of Hubbard, Miles Davis, and Wynton Marsalis but mostly sounds like herself, displays a lot of potential on this continually intriguing set. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
