NPR's All Songs Considered series reflects the intellectual bent and finely tuned eclecticism of the show for which it's named. Even without endearingly snooty host Robert Siegel, or the velvety tones of his colleague Michelle Norris, All Songs' selections sound intrinsically like the show. From the detached sway of Sigur Rós and Ry Cooder's sashaying "Bolero Sonámbulo," to the vaguely country wanderlust of the Walkabouts and Dirty Three, the album shades and expands on the moods ATC's brief segment bumps suggest. All Songs Considered, Vol. 3 moves fluidly from the twittering acid jazz of Koop's "Summer Sun" and through the Bad Plus' playful post-bop; it settles delicately into Anouar Brahem's oud-led "Leila au Pays du Carrousel" before getting a bit giddy with René Lacaille's "Debussy à la Réunion" (taken from his amazing, inventive 2002 release Digdig). Despite the confluence of styles present, the tracks cleverly reference one another. A fiddle's wavering line is intercepted and taken up by a saxophone, or perhaps a plucked electric guitar. Latin influences mesh easily with dusty Americana, and jazz meets world music in a shower of melody.
