The Westchester Jazz Orchestra is made up of veteran musicians who have played in the big bands led by Woody Herman, Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich, Lionel Hampton, and Maynard Ferguson, to name a few. Conducted by Mike Holober, who has led a number of excellent large ensemble dates under his own name, the orchestra is a finely tuned group that weaves tight ensembles behind the soloists. Horace Silver's lush "Peace" showcases the rich flugelhorn of Marvin Stamm and bassist Harvie S., while Holober's creative scoring of John Coltrane's "Naima" adds an unusual series of riffs behind the soloists (who include Jason Rigby and Mike Migliore on tenor sax). Mark Patterson's brilliant arrangement of the late pianist Bill Evans' "Turn out the Stars" is actually a condensed orchestration of Evans' moving "Solo -- In Memory of His Father" (debuted as a brilliant solo piano performance heard on Bill Evans at Town Hall that includes several other Evans' themes), featuring pianist Ted Rosenthal. Highly recommended! ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi
