Peter and Leni Gillman's unauthorized biography of the chameleon-like David Bowie is thick with background detail, from its revealing history of the Bowie family to the atmospheric descriptions of the sheer madness of life on the road with the charismatic superstar. The Gillmans' authoritative research gathers reminiscences from Bowie's many early acquaintances and colleagues, who provide fascinating background information on the singer's early attempts at establishing a music career, from mime to folk singing, and the subtle and not-so-subtle changes in his personality once he achieved stardom. The authors turn their analytical eye to both his business dealings, which are many and arcane, and his music, from early albums such as his self-titled debut to later influential recordings like LOW; their musical analysis is sharp and perceptive, if occasionally a little far-fetched, such as their reading of "Space Oddity" as a hymn to heroin (although their revelations of his later cocaine addiction, during which he came chillingly close to self-destruction, are very much rooted in fact). ALIAS DAVID BOWIE is an acutely researched and insightful look at this brilliant, complex musician.
