Outre les produits des echanges, on voit une societe alexandrine aux affaires, hommes de confiance des dynastes, magistrats, marchands alexandrins dans toutes leurs composantes communautaires - musulmans, coptes, juifs, Armeniens, Grecs, etc. - qui se frottent, pour un profit mutuel, aux grandes familles de marchands europeens. Au passage sont demontes et expliques, a partir des archives europeennes, les mecanismes complexes de la douane, des consulats et de leurs funduqs, jeu d'equilibre ou chacun essaie de tirer le maximum de profit, en evitant les abus de l'autre partie, mais sans rompre un equilibre precaire, sans arret negociable, en evitant une rupture qui serait prejudiciable a tous.
