"What Mr. McDonald's book does, with exceptional skill and learning, is to re-examine Hamilton's policies as secretary of the treasury. To this task the author brings a masterful knowledge of the politics of the period. . . . He brilliantly demonstrates how William Blackstone, David Hume and Jacques Necker affected Hamilton's thought. Finally, Mr. McDonald . . . gives the clearest exposition that I have ever seen of just what Hamilton's financial policies were and how they worked." --David Herbert Donald, New York Times ...

McDonald's biography was published in 1978. It contains much detail about political forces that supported and opposed Hamilton's policies, which is helpful now that hints of the shortcomings of fiat/fractional reserve currencies are appearing globally in the post 2008 meltdown era. The book is thoroughly researched and is a good background for reading recent books such as Thomas DiLornezo's 2011 book on Hamilton. Interesting too how it ties in Hamilton's childhood and how this shaped his support for a system that would erode landed wealth that tended to back states' power over Federal rule. Hamilton did not foresee the seeds of excessive banking and central government power today that he sowed, partly out of this blindness. McDonald could not foresee it either, being a creature of the mid-late 20th century, but his even-handedness lets the careful reader draw his own conclusions with factual and narrative development. www.conservativeeconomist.com
