The beginning is very interesting talking about the formation of Alaska, at one time, it was on the Equator, and then moved onto the people, and how they came there. It does deal a lot with Russia and it's religion, so be prepared to spend some time in Russia. I disliked the sea otter section, to this day, I feel bad for those poor animals, otherwise it is good book to read. Its a 'Michener' book, he can get very looooong winded in sections.

The introduction to Alaska for all Chechakos
This is the historical fiction book that explains Alaska to the readers. It starts from the beginning and works through the end of the 20th century.
I urge all newcomers (Chechakos) to read the book to understand how this unique state came to be what it is today. Many young people graduating from high school should read it to flesh out the knowledge they've acquired while living here.
Very readable, I highly recommend this well-researched book.

Micheners Alaska
James Michener is very descriptive in all of his books. I am truly sad when I finish a book. I feel that I am leaving friends behind. He not only describes the location but the personalities that lived through the ages in the location of each book. I have never visited Alaska but I believe I have seen it through his eyes. It is possibly the next best thing to being there.
