The old pattern gun ammunition barrels have square lid; new do. round lid. 329. Metal-lined Wood Catetfor Ammunition. The metal-lined case is a rectangular wooden box, copper lined. Whole cases are chiefly Issued to garrison and siege trains for protection of filled cartridges or bogs of powder in damp magazines. The smaller cases are seldom used for this purpose in land service. They contain tbo under-mentioned number of filled cartridges.-All compounds of nitro-glycerine have the disadvantage of congealing at a i&h temperature, nitro-glycerine at about 50, and there is liability to accident L thawing them. "342. Gunpowder.--Composed of 75 saltpetre, 10 sulphur, 15 charcoal. ae bulk of the Rases caused by combustion of gunpowder, when they are cold nd expanded to the rarity of common air, is 240 times that of the powder, vtience it is concluded that if they occupied a space equal the bulk of the pow-er they would have an elastic force equal 240 times pressure of atmosphere.
