Many empires have existed and fallen throughout history. Scholars point to many reasons for this: inequality, decaying infrastructure, an increase in violence and crime, declining birth rates, and lack of domestic industry. Others blame postmodernism and the increasing idea that "identity is everything." The fall of the American empire has long been predicted and modeled, but no one expected it to arrive as early as it did. After the murder of George Floyd in 2020, the U.S. saw riots in every major city across the country. The violence that ensued escalated in many places to a point of no return. When citizens started taking up arms against one another, things became very heated. After a coup at the U.S. Capitol, sieges across the country, and the west coast's earthquake, the United States found itself in the midst of a new Civil War. This fictitious oral history collection chronicles stories from ordinary (and some extraordinary) people across the landscape of the United States. Each narrative contributes to the history of how the second Civil War erupted in the U.S. and how it changed our country forever. The thirty stories recorded here, along with the Interviewer's thoughts, weave a complex tale highlighting different stages of the devolution of the American empire.
