EXCERPT: Preface-This book is intended to provide the essential undergraduate mathematics needed by engineering students following a course in calculus. The development is motivated by applications in engineering, and many practical illustrations are given. The recent phenomenal development of digital computers has greatly changed attitudes towards the role of mathematics in applied fields. Many previously unassailable problems can now be solved routinely by using prepared computer programs. One might easily conclude that less mathematical theory is needed. However, use of the computer without real understanding can easily lead to meaningless solutions to problems. Hence a solid grasp of the relevant mathematics is all the more necessary. In this book, the computer is taken into account in various ways. Mathematical methods which underlie computer solutions are highlighted. Furthermore, a solid chapter (Chapter 13) is devoted to numerical analysis. Such recently developed tools as Romberg integration and the fast Fourier transform are considered in detail. An introduction to the finite-element method is presented in a separate chapter (Chapter 14). In view of the variety of courses in the subject area, the author has sought to make the chapters essentially independent. Thus there is considerable freedom in ordering the chapters......Many exercises are provided throughout. Answers to selected problems are given at the end of the text; those problems for which answers are provided have letters or numbers in boldface type...
